Ask any Bears' student-athlete who has regularly ventured into the basement of Tuohy Hall over the last 15 years and they’ll recount the numerous stories they’ve heard about a new gym being built by the time they graduated. Finally, their wishes have been granted!!! After a long and arduous wait for the SJC Brooklyn community, construction on the new multi-purpose facility commenced on May 22, 2012, the day after the Brooklyn commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2012.
The new multi-purpose facility, which will house NCAA-regulation basketball and volleyball courts, a fitness center and locker rooms, will be the first true on-campus athletics venue in the Brooklyn campus' history. The basketball and volleyball teams currently play their home games at nearby Brooklyn Technical High School and practice in the gymnasium in the Tuohy Hall basement, the same gym used back in 1950. Coming on the heels of the opening of the state-of-the-art $14 million dollar Outdoor Athletic Complex out in Patchogue this past March, this marks the start of a long-awaited dream for the Brooklyn campus. While most of the Bears' 13 varsity sports and 170 student-athletes will continue to search for other venues to compete, at least the basketball and volleyball teams will finally have a place to call home!
More information about the new multi-purpose facility can be found in the feature article of the St. Joseph’s College Magazine, Fall 2010 edition.
Construction is taking place on the site of the former parking lot on Vanderbilt Avenue and is expected to last approximately 18 months. A sign on the outside of the construction site has a target completion date of Thursday, November 21, 2013. Follow the progress of the construction with daily photo and video updates on the Multi-Purpose Building Construction facebook page.
