Willis and Doherty Honored as Outstanding Student-Athletes at 28th Annual SJC Golf Classic

ROSLYN HARBOR, N.Y. — On Thursday, May 31, St. Joseph's College hosted the 28th Annual Golf Classic at the Engineer's Club, with all proceeds supporting the Departments of Athletics of St. Joseph's College. Cloudy skies and scattered rain couldn't spoil the fun-filled day of golf, that brought together staff, students, alumni, and college supporters.

In addition to honoring Matthew J. Barbis '94 for his contributions to the College, four student-athletes—two each from SJC Brooklyn and SJC Long Island—were recognized as Outstanding Student-Athletes for their academic and athletic success, as well as campus and community impact over their time as student-athletes.

"I'd like to thank all of those who came out and supported our event this year," remarked Director of Athletics James Lally. "This outing is the largest fundraiser we host each year for athletics and brings together alumni and friends of our programs for a fun-filled day. A special thank you and congratulations to this year's honoree, Matt Barbis who is the epitome of what it means to be an SJC alum."

New alumnus and outgoing Bears Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President Alec Willis (men's basketball, volleyball, and cross country) and rising senior Shannon Doherty (women's swimming and cross country) were honored as the 2018 Outstanding Brooklyn Student-Athletes. Recent graduates Erin MacDonell (women's cross country) and Matthew Burnett (baseball) were selected as the Outstanding Long Island Student-Athletes.
